Edit: I'm way too old. As became obvious to me in a welcome comment to this entry, the phrase "clear the house" isn't really used as much as it used to be, if at all. I remember comedians saying "Well that one cleared the house," after a joke that wasn't well received, meaning the silence was so deafening everyone must have left. But heck I remember President Nixon giving his final good-bye address. It cleared the White House. :) And thinking of that, I have another favorite James Taylor song I have been listening to since the vote to extend the depression. Posted here.
